Judit Polgar

A ‘changing of the guard’?  Hardly.  But it was the first encounter between the current Women’s World Chess Champion and the highest rated female of all time.  The encounter  took place in the 7th round of the Gibraltar Chess Festival.  It was a Sicilian Defense that was handled very nicely on the White side by Hou, although I must say that ‘f6′ by Polgar on move 23 looked ‘rock solid’ instead of the ‘h6′ played.

The fifth round of the Unive 2011 Tournament featured two wins.  The first (again) by Kramnik which extended his (already) devastating lead at the expense of the French Champion Legrave.  The second was Giri’s win versus Polgar.

Vladimir Kramnik

Judit Polgar

In the second round Kramnik again had the white pieces. He built up a tremendous position against Polgar’s Queen’s Indian complex and by move 21 Black was driven to desperation. By move 27 (DIAGRAM) Kramnik dominated the center, had connected passed Pawns on the Queenside and was barreling down towards the black monarch. Click on the board to play through the game.
