Reuben Fine vs Botvinnik
|
Reuben Fine |
Mikhail Botvinnik |
In the first round of the famous A.V.R.O. Tournament of 1938, Reuben Fine of the United States demolished the future (and several times) World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. It’s hard to find a game (most likely impossible) where Botvinnik was ever strategically outplayed within the first dozen moves; certainly not in such a high profile event. A.V.R.O. 1938 was supposed to select a challenger to play against Alexander Alekhine – the (then) World Champion; Alekhine managed to slip around that and avoid playing a match against the tournament Co-Winners Paul Keres and Reuben Fine.
The notes in the the PGN file (Click on the Diagram and/or See Comments) are by Fine with a little Botvinnik sprinkled in.
This game is truly a Classic.
