This tournament – Only Two Rounds – is history in the making.
Levon Aronian (World’s Number 2) has lost his first two games.
Magnus Carlsen has won two games; both long endings, but both extremely well played. The awe being expressed at Carlsen’s endings is something to behold; the games look to be ‘almost’ drawn, but in retrospect, he is firmly in the drivers seat and brings the point inevitably home; absolutely beautiful stuff.
In looking at the Carlsen game (below) realize that in the final position after Black interposes the check, White will sacrifice his Knight on d6).
On par (so far) with Carlsen is Vladimir Kramnik. This guy is amazing; very firmly in control, and not at all phased by the constantly changing contours of the game. Hikaru Nakamura ‘prepared’ a move order switch in the Scotch Opening. Kramnik acclimated perfectly and was better (winning?) very early on; say by move 20 – and with the Black pieces no less.
The two draws were very hard fought.
Gawain Jones had a beautiful Rook sacrifice leading to a perpetual check.
Vishy Anand survived a Rook and Pawn ending two pawns down at one point.
This is a FIGHTING tournament.
Congratulations to all – My goodness – this is only the second round ! !

Vladimir Kramnik |
The sixth round of the 2012 Olympiad taking place in Istanbul had two notable games. No – Polgar did not play Kramnik, but the Hungarian team did play against Poland, and the Russian team did play against Armenia. Both Polgar and Kramnik played the White pieces this round. Judit Polgar is number one on the Women’s rating list and Kramnik is number three on the World list. Of note is that Kramnik was playing Aronian who is currently number two on the World list.

Judit Polgar / Greek Team Championships 2012
Judit Polgar, the highest rated female chess player in history, is playing in the 2012 Greek Team Championships.
In the 6th round she played a lower rated player who appeared to be playing an opening with a drawish reputation, the Petrof Defense or Russian Game. This opening has been used at the highest levels especially when one playing Black wishes to neutralize White’s initiative and steer the game for quiet waters. Alas – it takes two to tango. Judit had good central pressure and spotted a major flaw in Black’s ‘attack’ on move 28 (Diagram).

Unive 2011 / Round 5
The fifth round of the Unive 2011 Tournament featured two wins. The first (again) by Kramnik which extended his (already) devastating lead at the expense of the French Champion Legrave. The second was Giri’s win versus Polgar.
The games are below.
